GameSpy Mythos Preview
GameSpy has a preview of Mythos up on their website. They talk about what the gameplay is like, the different game modes and the races.
Good news indeed for the lapsed Diablo II fan, or just about everyone else who craves an experience that can be light on commitment but often heavy on consequence.
Upon character creation, you’ll notice a series of check boxes next to the naming field. If you mark the one listed as “Elite,” then every monster you encounter will be stronger and more resilient (due to your attacks doing less damage across the board). The one marked “Shadowlands Only” will force your character to permanently reside in a PvP-enabled instance of the gameworld, meaning you’re fair game for all comers, regardless of level disparity. The one marked “Hardcore,” finally, does it like Diablo II. If you die in combat, regardless of the reason, your character’s gone. Internet thrill-seekers should bear in mind that you can check all three of these boxes upon character creation for an experience that’s sure to be memorable, if more than likely brief.
The four races in Mythos, at this point, amount to little more than aesthetic differences with a few tweaked stats. The three classes, however, are built to support multiple roles, offering up gameplay possibilities beyond their lean count. The pyromancer is ostensibly the “mage” class, but if you spec your character a certain way, you’ll have access to a bunch of attacks and abilities designed to keep you alive and lethal on the front lines. Meanwhile, the gadgeteer class is more or less meant to shoot stuff with guns, but if you drop points into the “tinker” tree, you’ll have access to a gang of pets that can do much of your dirty work for you.
